Ubuntu has recently released its latest LTS version 20.04. With new updates, Ubuntu has shipped many latest features nd advantage of Long Term Support for Ubuntu 19.10.
Upgrading to 20.04 LTS from 18.04 or 19.10 is way simple than installing from boot. If you have installed 14.04 or later version, then you can install 20.04 with just simple bellow steps:
Note: Before you start upgrading to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, it is recommended that you take backup of your existing Ubuntu system and all your data.
Step 1: Launch Update Manager
Open menu and search for Update Manager software. If you have Ubuntu version lesser than 18.04, then search for Software Updater.
Open the appication and it will check for software updation for the current release. If there are any updates, then please update it. If it ask to restart the system, then restart it.
Step 2: Software & Updates
Now from the menu search for Software and Update application.
From the Updates tab in Software and Updates application, set the Notify me of a new Ubuntu version dropdown menu to either For any new version or For long-term support versions. It my ask to enter password to save the settings.
Step 3: Check for Ubuntu 20.04
Now click on Close button and once again open Update Manager. This time it will check for the new distribution.
Click on Upgrade button. If there is no upgrade appears, first close Update Manager if it’s still running. Now open Terminal and run the bellow command.
update-manager -d
Step 4: Proceed to Upgrade
After you click on Upgrade button and input Password, a window will open about with the Release Notes for the distribution you’re about to upgrade.
Select the Upgrade button and it will start downloding new distribution.
After few moments, it will ask Do you want to start the upgrade? This is last confirmation for the upgrade. Press Start Upgrade to start upgrade process. It may ask for new package installation or old package loss confirmation.
After everything complete, a popup window will ask to restart the computer.
That's it. You have successfully upgraded to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. Enjoy the new upgrades.
